On center refers to a certain distance between like materials, center to center. For example, “16 on center” means the center of the stud is spaced every 16 inches. In our work, we measure the on center of studs so we can report to the insulation subcontractor the size of the insulation needed. The depth is also measured so they have the exact width and depth of the insulation.
